YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (11-3, 5-3) battled back to earn a doubleheader split with No. 16 ranked College of Southern Nevada Coyotes (11-2, 9-2) on Friday afternoon, falling 15-5 in game one before coming from behind to win 6-4 win the second game at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.

Bronson Neave went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in and Nathan Houston went 1-for-1 with two walks in the 15-5 loss in game one.

The Matadors scored the first three runs of the game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning before the Coyotes put up back-to-back four-run innings in the second and third.

Neave brought the Matadors back within three runs with a two-run double in the third inning, but the Coyotes responded with a seven-run sixth inning to pull away.

Paul Medina tossed two scoreless innings in relief for the Matadors and Andres Ontiveros went 1-for-1 with two runs scored in the loss.

Gerardo Castro was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in as the Matadors came back from down three runs to earn a 6-4 win in game two.

The Matadors opened the scoring in the fourth inning on a single up the middle to score Luca Hoerger to put the Matadors in front 1-0.

Southern Nevada answered with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Castro doubled in a run in the seventh before Parker Husu trimmed the deficit to one run with a groundout scoring Castro.

Bronson Neave tied the game with a triple to right field to score Houston in the eighth inning and then came home to score on a throwing error, putting the Matadors in front 5-4 before Castro drove in his third run of the game with a single to right scoring Hoerger.

Hoerger went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Diego Evans tossed 3.2 innings in relief without allowing a run and striking out four to earn the win.

The Matadors and the Coyotes wrap up the series on Saturday, February 15, at Noon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
