Baseball scores 31 runs in doubleheader sweep of California Post Grad

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 23 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (15-5) opened a six-game homestand with a doubleheader sweep of California Post Grad, winning game one 9-0 before taking game two 22-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.  

Aiden Schmidgall tossed four shutout innings to help the Matadors win their second consecutive game to open the doubleheader.

Nathan Houston opened the scoring with an RBI double in the third inning before Andres Ontiveros added a second on an infield single. Another infield single, this time from Bronson Neave, pushed the score to 3-0.  

Gregorys Mateo smashed his second homer of the season to extend the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning and the Matadors continued to build the lead, capping off the scoring on a Neave run-scoring triple in the sixth inning.

For a second straight game, the Matadors got a strong starting performance on the mound, this time from starter Mac Gatzke who tossed four scoreless innings in the game-two win.

The Matadors scored a season-high 22 runs in game two, topping their previous season-high of 16 runs in the season opener.

The Matadors return to action on Friday, February 28, hosting Community Christian in the opener of a three-game ACCAC series at 2:00 pm at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
