
Baseball uses five-run third inning to open conference play with 5-4 win over Yavapai
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (5-0, 1-0) opened its home portion of the 2025 schedule with a 5-4 win over Yavapai College (2-2, 2-2) to kick off conference play on Friday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
The Matadors used a five-run third inning to come from behind and win their fifth consecutive game to open the season.
Luis Angulo went 1-for-4 with a three-run double, driving in the would-be game-winning run in the bottom of the third inning. Javier Diaz was 1-for-3 with a single and a walk, scoring a run in the Matadors' win.
Yavapai opened the scoring with a run in the first and a run in the third to take a 2-0 lead before the Matadors' five-run bottom of the third inning. The Roughriders plated two more runs in the fourth inning to cut the Matadors' lead to a run at 5-4.
Ismael Cordoba earned the win in relief for the Matadors, tossing 3.2 shutout innings while striking out three batters before Cade Webber finished the game with two scoreless frames to earn the save.
The Matadors are back in action on Saturday, February 1, taking on Yavapai in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at Noon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
