Baseball uses offensive onslaught to sweep Community Christian in doubleheader

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 23 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (18-5, 10-5) scored 37 runs to sweep the Community Christian College Saints (0-18, 0-18) on Saturday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field, winning 22-0 in game one and 15-1 in game two, finishing both games in five innings.

Gregorys Mateo went 4-for-4 with three doubles and four runs batted in, while Bronson Neave homered and drove in six runs, going 2-for-4 in the 22-0 win over the Saints in game one.

The Matadors scored all 22 runs in the first three innings of the game, opening up the scoring with seven runs in the first, nine in the second, and capping off the scoring with a six-run third.

Nathan Houston drove in three runs, and Andres Ontiveros had three hits and knocked in a pair of runs in the win, while Sergio Lugo, Diego Evans, and Isaac Camacho combined for the shutout.

The Matadors smashed four home runs in the 15-1 win in game two, led by Dan Kawanishi, who went 4-for-4 with two triples and a home run, driving in five runs in the win.

Arizona Western continued its trend of putting up a crooked number in the first inning, scoring eight runs in the first and two in the second before scoring six runs in the third. Community Christian scored its lone run of the series in the fourth, but the Matadors answered with two more in the bottom of the fourth inning,

Mateo, Lucca Hoerger, and Gerardo Casto also homered in the win as Hoerger drove in three runs. Aiden Schmidgall made the start, striking out six batters in four innings before Felix Brunner put up a scoreless frame in the final inning.

The Matadors are back in action at home on Monday, March 3, hosting Asian Breeze in a single game with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 pm at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
