
Matadors Baseball battles back to earn doubleheader split with Central Arizona
YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 20 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (20-6, 11-6) split a doubleheader with Central Arizona (15-10, 8-9) on Saturday afternoon at McSwain Field in Coolidge, Ariz., losing game one 2-1 before winning 10-3 in the finale.
Segio Lugo allowed two runs in 6.2 innings of work on just five hits while striking out a pair of hitters in the 2-1 loss in the opener.
Parker Husu had a pair of hits, while Javier Diaz drove in the lone Matadors' run in the game with an RBI single in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Central Arizona walked off winners with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game.
After being held to one run in the opener, the Matadors got the offense going early in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning on RBI singles from Bronson Neave, Gerardo Castro, and Victor Lopez to give the Matadors a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Neave added the Matadors' fourth run of the game in the second inning before they added another in the third on a wild pitch.
Arizona Western added another run in the fifth before Diaz launched a solo homer in the sixth inning to push the lead to 7-0.
Matadors' starter Lukas Pacal allowed three runs in 5.2 innings before giving way to Diego Evans, who wiggled out of a jam in the sixth inning after the Vaqueros scored three runs to get within 7-3.
Arizona Western answered with a three-spot of their own in the top of the eighth inning to pull away for the 10-3 win.
The Matadors return home on Saturday, March 15, hosting Salt Lake in a doubleheader beginning at Noon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
