Baseball outslugged by Roughriders in doubleheader sweep at Yavapai

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (25-12, 11-9) suffered a pair of losses to Yavapai (20-11, 11-10) on Saturday afternoon at Roughrider Park in Prescott, Ariz., losing game one 15-4 before falling in game two 15-14 in extra innings.

Javier Diaz went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in in the opener of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon as the Matadors fell 15-4.

Yavapai scored the first 12 runs of the game in the first four innings before the Matadors got on the board in the fifth inning, scoring four runs thanks to a Roughriders' error and RBI hits from Dorian Bouniol and Diaz.

Yavapai ended the game in five innings thanks to a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Nathan Houston homered twice and drove in five runs in game two while Bronson Neave homered and drove in four runs, going 3-for-4 in the 15-14 loss in 10 innings.

The Matadors jumped out to a 3-0 lead but Yavapai answered with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. After Arizona Western tied the game in the second inning, the Roughriders had an answer once again, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second.

Neave hit a three-run homer and Gerardo Castro doubled in a run in the fourth inning as the Matadors put four runs on the board to tie the game at 9-9.

Yavapai built the lead back up to four runs at 13-9 before the Matadors extended the game in the ninth with a four-spot thanks to a three-run homer by Houston and a Castro sacrifice fly.

The Matadors took the lead in the 10th on a bases-loaded walk but Yavapai won the game in the bottom of the 10th on a two-run home run.

Luca Hoerger went 2-for-5 with a home run and two runs batted in while Castro drove in a pair and collected two hits in the loss.

The Matadors return home to host White Rock from Surrey, British Columbia, Canada in a single game on Tuesday, March 25 at 1:00 pm at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
