Starting pitching shines in Baseball's doubleheader split with Eastern Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (27-13, 12-10) split a doubleheader with Eastern Arizona (22-16, 12-11) on Friday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field, losing game one 2-1 before taking game two 6-3.

Matadors' starter Lukas Pacal allowed one earned run in a complete game loss, recording eight strikeouts.

All three runs were scored in the fourth inning as the Gila Monsters took a 2-0 lead before the Matadors answered with a run of their own on an RBI single from Andres Ontiveros.

Ontiveros went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Nathan Houston went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in the loss.

Parker Husu went 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, and Ontiveros homered, going 2-for-3 in the Matadors' 6-3 win in game two.

The Matadors opened the scoring in the first inning with a run before Eastern Arizona answered with two runs of their own to take a 2-1 lead. Arizona Western scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead back.

Both teams tacked on runs in the sixth inning and the Matadors added their final run of the game in the eighth inning.

Sergio Lugo made the start for the Matadors and allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings while striking out seven before Gregorys Mateo tossed three shutout innings in relief to preserve the win.

The Matadors and Gila Monsters finish the series with a single nine-inning game on Saturday, March 29, with the first pitch scheduled for Noon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
