Baseball scores six unanswered runs to beat Eastern Arizona 7-6 in extra innings

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (28-13, 12-10) battled back from down five runs to beat Eastern Arizona (22-17, 12-12) 7-6 in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field in the series finale.  

Bronson Neave went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and Victor Lopez finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and two walks as the Matadors scored six unanswered runs to win the season-series finale with the Gila Monsters 7-6 in extra innings.

Eastern Arizona scored two runs in the first inning without the benefit of a hit and added a third run in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

Luca Hoerger put the Matadors on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the third inning, but Eastern Arizona responded by scoring the next three runs to push its lead to 6-1.

The Matadors started chipping away with a Neave RBI single in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 6-2. Gerado Castro made it 6-3 with a solo homer in the seventh before Javier Diaz was robbed of a home run to end the frame.

Nathan Houston, who finished the game 3-for-6, doubled to lead off the eighth inning and scored on an Ontiveros single. After the Matadors added another run on a fielder's choice, Lopez tied the game with an RBI single to center.  

It was Lopez who ended the game in the 10th inning, reaching on an infield single with two outs to score Dan Kawanishi and give the Matadors a 7-6 win.

The Matadors head to Henderson, Nev., to open a series with College of Southern Nevada on Friday, April 4 beginning at 2:00 pm from Morse Stadium.
