Men's Basketball suffers 65-63 overtime defeat to Eastern Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Matadors' Men's Basketball team (19-9, 12-6) fell in overtime, 65-63 to Eastern Arizona (22-6, 15-2) on Saturday afternoon at the House.

AJ Marmolejos led the Matadors in scoring with 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting while the Matadors got 26 combined bench points with Edwin Suarez and Joao Das Chagas each scoring 13 points.

The Gila Monsters came out quickly, scoring 12 of the first 14 points of the game to take a 12-2 lead and would maintain the lead throughout the first half. Arizona Western cut the deficit to 32-27 just before the half on a Jannoy Thomas putback.

The Matadors cut the deficit to two points early in the second half on a Marmolejos layup and took the lead late on a Marmolejos break-out basket. With the Matadors trailing by two points with under a minute to play, Das Chagas tipped in a miss to tie the game at 60-60 with 26 seconds left to go. Eastern Arizona outscored Arizona Western 5-3 in the overtime period as the Matadors' last-second shot fell short.

Thomas finished the game with eight points while LaRoi Glover scored six points and grabbed four rebounds in the loss.

The Matadors are back in action on Monday, March 4, hosting Glendale on Sophomore night at 7:30 pm at the House Gymnasium.
