Men's Basketball comes storming back to stun Western Texas 63-59 in overtime
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (1-0) opened the 2024-25 season with a come-from-behind 63-59 win in overtime over Western Texas (0-1) in Thatcher, Ariz., on Friday evening.
Matt Anglo led the Matadors with 15 points off the bench while Cam Atkinson scored 13 and Leano Rolle finished as the Matadors' third player in double-figures with 11 points to help the Matadors erase a 17 points second-half deficit to beat the Westerners in overtime.
The Matadors trailed 49-32 with 7:32 left in the game before going on a 19-2 run to end regulation and send the game to overtime tied at 51-51.
Arizona Western scored the first six points of the extra period, taking a 57-51 lead, its largest lead of the game, and held off a late push from Western Texas, outscoring the Westerners 29-10 over the final 12:32 of game play to earn the win in the season opener.
Atkinson helped fuel the comeback, scoring 11 of his 13 points in the second half, five of which came in the overtime period.
The Matadors shot just 30.4 percent from the field and went 4-for-26 from three but forced 20 Western Texas turnovers and secured 14 offensive rebounds while getting to the free throw line 23 times, going 17-for-23 in the win.
In addition to finishing as the Matadors' third-leading scorer, Rolle was the Matadors' top rebounder, recording a double-double with 11 boards.
The Matadors return to action tomorrow afternoon in Thatcher, Ariz., taking on Ranger College at Noon at Guitteau Gym on the campus of Eastern Arizona College.
