Men's Basketball sees seven-game winning streak come to an end with 90-78 loss at Yavapai

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (15-5, 6-3) struggled defensively on Saturday afternoon, seeing its seven-game winning streak come to an end with a 90-78 loss to Yavapai (9-13, 4-6) in Prescott, Ariz., at Walraven Gymnasium.

Kaleb Myers and Edwin Suarez each led the Matadors in scoring, scoring 17 points as Myers scored 13 of his 17 in the second half while Matt Anglo finished the game with 13 points.

Yavapai opened the game on a 6-0 run before the Matadors were able to cut into the early Roughriders' lead. While trailing 17-15 Aaron Barton beat the shot clock buzzer with a long three-pointer to put the Matadors in front at 18-17. Yavapai regained the lead and went up 42-36 prior to Paora Winitana stopping the run with a bucket. The Matadors entered the locker room at halftime trailing 44-39.

Kaleb Myers and Engel Guitierrez scored back-to-back baskets early in the second half to cut the deficit to 54-52 before an 8-2 Yavapai run had the Matadors back down eight at 62-54. Yavapai started connecting from distance and their lead ballooned to 81-63. The Matadors got to within 11 points with over a minute to play but couldn't get any closer, falling 90-78

The Matadors head to Douglas, Ariz., on Wednesday, January 29, taking on Cochise at 7:30 pm from Apache Stronghold Gymnasium.
