YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (15-6, 6-4) dropped its second consecutive game on Wednesday night in Douglas, Ariz., losing 74-72 to the Cochise Apaches (15-6, 7-2) at Apache Stronghold Gymnasium.
Edwin Suarez led all scorers with 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss, finishing as one of four Matadors to score in double-figures.
Cochise took the lead early and used a run to push the lead out to nine points in the first half at 19-10 before the Matadors closed the gap and cut the deficit to three points at 40-37 at the break.
The Matadors took their first lead of the game midway through the second half, grabbing a 47-46 advantage on a Matt Anglo jumper from the free throw line. The Matadors built their biggest lead at 67-63 on a Lucca Reinehr layup.
Arizona Western had a chance to tie or take the lead with two seconds left but was unable to get a shot up before the final buzzer sounded.
Anglo was the Matadors' second-leading scorer with 15 points while both Engel Gutierrez and Kaleb Myers had 13 points. Myers led the Matadors in rebounding with 12.
The Matadors return home on Saturday, February 1, hosting Central Arizona at 4:00 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
