Men's Basketball suffers 80-68 road defeat to Eastern Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (17-7, 8-5) saw its winning streak come to an end with an 80-68 loss to Eastern Arizona (22-3, 11-2) on Saturday afternoon in Thatcher, Ariz., at Guitteau Gymnasium.

Edwin Suarez scored 24 points and had a team-high eight rebounds in the loss and Matt Anglo scored 10 points to finish as the second of two Matadors to score in double-figures.

The Matadors and Gila Monsters traded baskets early with the Matadors leading by two points midway through the first half. Eastern built the lead to double figures before the Matadors put together a run to cut the deficit to 45-41 at the break.

Arizona Western shot 25.9% in the second half and went 0-for-4 from the three-point line as the Gila Monsters pulled away from the Matadors. The Matadors trailed by as many as 16 points and trimmed the deficit down to 12 points at the end of the second half.

Engel Gutierrez was the Matadors' third-leading scorer, scoring nine points and Kaleb Myers scored six points and was the team's second-leading rebounder with five boards.

The Matadors return home on Wednesday, February 12, hosting Community Christian in an ACCAC matchup at 7:30 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
