YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (20-7, 11-5) moved into a tie for second place in the ACCAC with a 56-52 win over Cochise (19-9, 11-5) on Saturday afternoon at the House Gymnasium.
Matt Anglo led the Matadors with a game-high 21 points in 33 minutes as the Matadors erased an early deficit to come from behind and beat the Apaches in the regular season home finale.
Cochise led by as many as 12 points in the first half and went on a scoring drought lasting more than five minutes before battling back to finish the half on a 7-0 run to pull within three points at 27-24. Engel Gutierrez gave the Matadors the lead at 38-37 in the second half with a three-pointer and the teams traded leads late before the Matadors went on a 10-0 run to take a 48-43 lead after an Anglo made three-pointer. Edwin Suarez tipped in a shot late to put the Matadors up for good at 52-50 with 23 seconds remaining.
Kaleb Myers was the only other Matador in double-figures finishing the game with 11 points and Suarez grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds in the win.
The Matadors head to Coolidge, Ariz., on Wednesday, February 26, taking on Central Arizona at 7:30 pm.
