YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (22-7, 13-5) led wire-to-wire, finishing off the regular season schedule with an 88-74 win over College of Southern Nevada (14-11, 9-9) on Saturday afternoon in North Las Vegas, Nev., at the CSN Coyote Center.
Matt Anglo scored a team-high 20 points and went 10-for-11 from the free-throw line to help the Matadors win their fifth straight game.
The Matadors used a 24-4 run early in the first half to put some distance between them and the Coyotes. Arizona Western shot 54.3 percent in the first half and scored 44 points, holding the Coyotes to just 19 points in the first 20 minutes on 25.0 percent shooting.
Arizona Western had its largest lead of the game at 27 points at 58-31 in the second half and were able to hold off the Coyotes, who outscored the Matadors 43-30 over the remainder of the game.
Engel Gutierrez was the Matadors' second-leading scorer, scoring 14 points, and Boubacar Diatta added 13 points. Kaleb Myers had 14 points and 12 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Edwin Suarez was the fifth Matador to score in double figures, scoring 10 points.
The Matadors are back in action in the Region I Semifinals, heading to Douglas, Ariz., to battle the two-seeded Cochise Apaches at Apache Stronghold Gymnasium at a time to be determined.
