PHOENIX, Ariz. – The No. 2 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Men's Soccer team (7-0-3, 4-0-2) fought to a 2-2 draw with the No. 2 ranked team in NJCAA Division 2, Phoenix (5-0-2, 3-0-2) on Saturday evening at Hoy Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the Matadors opened the scoring 10 minutes into the second half, scoring a goal off the counterattack on a ball played into the six-yard box by Erick Mejia, finding Terry Makedika who tapped the ball past the keeper to put the Matadors in front 1-0.
Phoenix answered 12 minutes later on a counter-attack of their own, leveling the score at 1-1 on a close-range shot in the 67th minute. The Bears kept the pressure on and took the lead a few minutes later with a shot from just inside the box.
The Matadors kept their undefeated run of form going thanks to a Karim Nlamu bicycle kick in the 90th minute, beating the keeper to the back post, and leveling the score at 2-2.
The Matadors are back in action on October 3, heading to Prescott, Ariz., to take on Yavapai at Ken Lindley Field at 6:00 p.m.
