YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 2 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Men's Soccer team (9-0-3, 5-0-2) used a pair of Terry Makedika goals and another stellar effort defensively to beat Scottsdale (2-7-3, 2-4-2) 3-0 on Saturday evening at Matador Soccer Field.
Scottsdale threatened early in the contest, forcing Matadors' keeper Esteban Gonzalez to make a diving save at the back post, keeping the game scoreless in the first half. Fernando Carvalho nearly gave Arizona Western the lead in the 40th minute, blasting a shot from the top of the 18-yard off the hands of the Scottsdale goalkeeper.
The Matadors wasted little time in the second half, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 49th minute when Stephen Saladin pumped a ball into the box that was put into the net by Terry Makedika right on the doorstep, giving the Matadors a 1-0 lead.
Makedika made it a 2-0 lead when he beat the keeper at the near post off a cross from Shuntaro Endo before Rezhis Koxhaj added the Matadors' third goal in the 79th minute off a rebound from a Makedika shot to up the lead to 3-0.
The Matadors head back out on the road on Tuesday, October 11, heading to Tucson, Ariz., for a matchup with Pima at 7:00 p.m.
