Men's Soccer beats GateWay 9-0 to win fourth straight

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 1 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Men's Soccer team (11-0-3, 8-0-2) remained unbeaten and pushed its winning streak to four games with a 9-0 win over GateWay (2-11-1, 0-8-1) on Saturday evening at Matador Soccer Field.

The Matadors wasted little time getting started, scoring the game's opening goal in the sixth minute thanks to a cross from Alvaro Hormigos to the back post where Ayumu Kimura poked the ball into the open net, giving the Matadors a 1-0 lead.

The reigning NJCAA DI Men's Soccer Player of the Week, Terry Makedika, added the Matadors' lead less than a minute later, scoring the Matadors' second goal after receiving a pass right on the doorstep before beating the keeper. Makedika scored his second of the game in the 14th minute, heading home a cross from Hormigos. Hormigos grabbed a goal of his own in the 15th minute, striking a ball past the keeper after a long run into the 18-yard box to push the lead to 4-0.

Stephen Saladin put home the Matadors' fifth goal of the half, burying a strike from the top of the box to push the lead to 5-0 in the 33rd minute. Wiktor Kwiatkowski scored the Matadors' sixth goal with a blast from 20 yards out to extend the lead to 6-0 in the 78th minute before Karim Nlamu kept the scoring going in the 82nd minute with a strike from 25 yards out to push the lead to 7-0. Hiromasa Iwai added the eighth goal in the 83rd minute before Saneyuki Yamagata put home a penalty in the 84th minute for the Matadors' ninth goal of the night.
