YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 8 ranked Arizona Western Matadors scored the lone goal of the game in the first half in a 1-0 win over Eastern Arizona on Tuesday evening at John Mickelson Stadium in Thatcher, Ariz., to open conference play.

Diogo Silvestre scored his second goal of the season in the 19^th minute, putting a ball past the keeper from just outside of the six-yard box on a cross from Christopher Martinez from the edge of the area.

Arizona Western had a chance to add an insurance goal late but was denied by the Eastern Arizona keeper on the doorstep with just four minutes remaining in the game.

Esteban Gonzalez kept the Gila Monsters off the scoreboard, recording his second clean sheet of the season and his second consecutive.

The Matadors are back in action on Wednesday, September 4, taking on Western Texas in Thatcher, Ariz. at 3:00 pm.
