Big second half helps Men's Soccer to 9-0 win over Imperial Valley

YUMA, Ariz. –  The No. 6 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Men's Soccer team (5-1-1) extended its unbeaten streak to six games with a 9-0 win over Imperial Valley College on Tuesday night at Matadors Soccer Field.

Arizona Western enjoyed much of the possession in the first 45 minutes and came close to taking the lead on a pair of free kicks from just outside the 18-yard box but could not grab a goal before the break.

The Matadors opened the scoring eight minutes into the second half when Iman Ouedraogo headed a ball past the keeper at the back post off a corner kick from Ebenezer Laryea to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead.

Karim Nlamu doubled the lead with a goal two minutes later, scoring off a ball from Nael Redjam right on the doorstep to push the lead to 2-0. Laryea made it a 3-0 lead with a strike from 20 yards out, upping the lead to 3-0. Ouegraogo added his second goal to extend the lead to 4-0 before Shaho Sardar and Stephen Saladin each scored to make it a 6-0 lead.

Peter Yaro added the seventh goal of the game, scoring on a penalty in the 82nd minute to up the advantage to 7-0. Klidi Stermolli capped off the Matadors' scoring with back-to-back goals to give the Matadors the 9-0 win.

The Matadors are back in action on Tuesday, September 24, taking on College of Southern Nevada at 4:30 pm at Matadors Soccer Field. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
