Matadors squander lead, settle for 3-3 draw with Coyotes

YUMA, Ariz. - The No. 5 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Men's Soccer team (10-1-2, 6-1-2) couldn't hold on to a late lead, settling for a 3-3 draw with College of Southern Nevada (3-8-2, 3-5-2) on Saturday evening in North Las Vegas, Nev. at the Cheyenne Sports Complex.

Giulio Mapessa scored two of the Matadors' three goals. But it wasn't enough to secure a win on Saturday evening as the Coyotes scored the game-tying goal in the 83rd minute to level the scoreline just two minutes after Mapessa gave the Matadors the lead.

Southern Nevada opened the scoring on Saturday, scoring a goal in the 15th minute before Mapessa answered four minutes later with a goal on a pass from Ebenezer Laryea to tie the game at 1-1 in the 20th minute. The Matadors fell behind once again in the 31st minute but were able to equalize five minutes later thanks to a goal from Peter Yaro, assisted by Klidi Stermolli

Mapessa gave the Matadors a 3-2 lead in the 81st minute, scoring his second goal of the game before Southern Nevada had the quick answer to earn a point with the 3-3 draw.

The Matadors return home on Tuesday, October 22, when they host Mohave at 4:30 p.m. at the Matador Soccer Field in the final regular-season game. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
