Late first half surge propels Men's Soccer to 2-0 win over Mohave

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 6 ranked Arizona Western Matadors (11-1-2, 7-0-2) returned home to finish off its regular season schedule with a 2-0 win over Mohave (7-6-1, 6-3-1) on Tuesday evening at Matador Soccer Field.

Mohave recorded the first two shots on goal as they controlled the early portion of the game before the Matadors controlled late in the first half.

With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Arizona Western grabbed the lead when Diogo Silvestre picked up a ball from Iman Ouedraogo Jr. and beat the keeper to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute.

The Matadors added a second goal in the 42nd minute when Hiromasa Iwaii knocked a ball to the back post off a deflected shot from Nael Redjam on the set piece to put the Matadors in front 2-0 just before the half.

Esteban Gonzalez kept the Bighorns off the scoreboard, recording three saves in 90 minutes in the shutout win.

The Matadors will be back home on Tuesday, October 29 for the Region I semifinals hosting an opponent to be determined at 4:30 pm at Matador Soccer Field.
