YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 6 ranked Arizona Western Matadors claimed their fourth consecutive Region I championship on Saturday afternoon, beating Yavapai 1-0 in the Region I final at Matador Soccer Field thanks to a late second-half goal.
The Matadors scored the lone goal of the game with just over nine minutes remaining when Shuto Sano snuck a ball past the Yavapai keeper off a corner kick from Ebenezer Laryea to give the Matadors the 1-0 lead.
Matadors' keeper Esteban Gonzalez made three saves in the win, playing all 90 minutes to earn the shutout.
Arizona Western controlled possession early in the first half but was unable to grab an early lead and had to fend off a late charge from the Roughriders before heading into the locker room tied 0-0 at the break.
The Matadors head to Utah to take on the Region 18 winner, Snow College, in the West District Final, on Saturday, November 9 at a time to be determined.
