YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (4-5) swept a doubleheader to begin a four-game series in Texas, beating El Paso Community College (4-2) 11-0 and 6-4 on Friday afternoon.
Natalie Pinon went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple while driving in a pair of runs while Krislyn Corral also collected three hits, going 3-for-4 with a double in the win.
The Matadors opened the scoring by putting five runs on the board in the first inning to open up a 5-0 lead and added two more in the third, another in the fourth before scoring three more in the fifth, highlighted by a Léa Fréchette two-run homer.
Corral tossed five shutout innings in a complete game win in the circle, striking out five batters while allowing just two hits.
Corral once again led the Matadors in game two, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored and Fréchette drove in a pair in the 6-4 win.
The Matadors scored the first six runs of the game, scoring a run in the first, two in the fourth, and three in the sixth inning. The Tejanas rallied in the seventh inning, scoring four runs to cut the Matadors' lead to 6-4.
Analy Trejo struck out four batters in 6.1 innings in the start to earn the win in the circle for the Matadors.
The Matadors and Tejanas wrap up the series on Saturday, February 8, taking on El Paso in a doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 10:00 am.
