Softball returns home to sweep Luna Community College in doubleheader

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Matadors Softball team (8-5) extended its winning streak to a season-best six games with a doubleheader sweep of Luna Community College (0-12) on Thursday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field, winning game one 8-0 before winning game two 7-2.

Destiny Martinez smacked a three-run homer as part of a Matadors' six-run second inning to pull away from the Roughriders in game one of the doubleheader.

Krisylin Corral allowed just one hit over five shutout innings in the circle for the Matadors while going 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs batted in. Hannah Love also drove in two runs while going a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish.

The Matadors added a run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth as Alissa Pinon singled in a run to end the game at 8-0.

Rauni Gallegos and Natalie Pinon each had two hits including a triple while both drove in a run to help the Matadors earn the doubleheader sweep with a 7-2 win in game two.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when the Matadors plated a pair of runs and added three more in the fifth. Arizona Western pushed the lead to 7-0 in the sixth before Luna scored its lone two runs of the game in the top of the seventh inning.

Matadors' starter Daysy Juarez struck out eight batters in 6.1 innings while allowing one earned run in the win.

As an offense, the Matadors smacked three triples in the game and stole seven bases, three of which were swiped by Natalie Pinon.

The Matadors return to action on Friday, February 14, hosting Luna Community College at 10:00 am and Utah State Eastern at 2:00 pm at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
