
Softball opens conference play with doubleheader split with Eastern Arizona
YUMA, Ariz., - The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (13-6, 1-1) opened conference play with a doubleheader split with Eastern Arizona (10-7, 1-1) on Friday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field, winning game one 6-5 before falling in game two 4-0.
Lea Frechette went 2-for-3 with four runs batted in to help the Matadors come from behind and beat the Gila Monsters 6-5 in game one.
The Matadors fell behind 3-0 after three innings before coming back to tie the game in the sixth inning. After Eastern Arizona regained the lead with a two spot in the top of the seventh inning, Frechette tied the game with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning before Autumn Arriola drove in the game-winning run with a single.
Krisilyn Corral went 2-for-4, and Hannah Love tripled as the Matadors opened the conference schedule with a 6-5 win.
The Matadors were held scoreless in game two, losing the finale of the doubleheader 4-0 as the Matadors were held to six hits, with two of them coming off the bat of Natalie Pinon, who went 2-for-3.
Eastern Arizona scored a pair of runs in each of the second and seventh innings.
Rauni Gallegos also recorded two hits in the loss, going 2-for-3, while Lili Vigil German allowed two earned runs in seven innings.
The Matadors and the Gila Monsters meet again on Saturday, March 1, in a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
