
Softball returns home to sweep Western Nebraska in doubleheader
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (14-8) got back in the win column with a doubleheader sweep of Western Nebraska (7-11) on Monday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field, winning game one 7-1 before coming from behind to win game two 8-7.
Lea Frechette drove in four runs while Lili Vigil German allowed just one unearned run over seven innings as the Matadors scored seven unanswered runs to win game one 7-1.
The Cougars took the lead with a run in the third inning before the Matadors answered in the bottom half to tie the game at 1-1.
Arizona Western sent nine batters to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring five runs, highlighted by a three-run triple from Frechette.
Julia Saucedo had a pair of hits and drove in a run as the Matadors snapped a three-game losing streak with the win.
The Matadors trailed by three runs twice in an 8-7 win in game two as Hannah Love drove in four runs, going 2-for-3 in the win.
Both teams scored three runs in their halves of the first inning as the Matadors came back to tie the game at 3-3.
Another big inning helped the Matadors retake the lead in the fifth inning as Rauni Gallegos drove in two runs with a double.
Autumn Arriola struck out six batters in 4.2 innings of relief to earn the win.
The Matadors are back at home on Friday, March 14, taking on Central Arizona in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at Noon at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
