Softball completes four-game series sweep of Central Arizona Vaqueras

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (20-11, 6-6) finished off a four-game series sweep of Central Arizona (7-19, 1-11) on Saturday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field, winning game one 6-5 before taking the finale 8-1.

Rauni Gallegos put together her third straight two-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in as the Matadors scored five of their six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come from behind and win game one 6-5.

The Matadors trailed 2-0 in the sixth inning before grabbing their first run of the game on an Autumn Arriola groundout.

After Central Arizona scored three runs in the seventh inning, the Matadors batted nine times in the bottom half, scoring the winning run on a Larissa Rueda walk-off single, her second of the series.

Nadya Moreno went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Analy Trejo picked up the win in relief, allowing an unearned run in one inning of work.

Once again Gallegos collected a pair of hits in game two as the Matadors scored eight unanswered runs over the final two innings to win 8-1.

Central Arizona took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, scoring first for the third time in the series, before the Matadors batted nine times in the fifth inning, scoring five runs and adding three more in the sixth.

Gallegos went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and Jayleen Espinoza went 2-for-3 with two doubles in the win. Lili Vigil German allowed one unearned run on five hits in seven innings with six strikeouts.

The Matadors head north to Prescott, Ariz., to open on a four-game series with the Yavapai Roughriders on Friday, March 28 with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm from Bill Vallely Field.
