Softball loses two games to Roughriders in Friday doubleheader

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (20-13, 6-8) dropped both games of a doubleheader with Yavapai (15-9, 8-6) on Friday afternoon at Bill Vallely Field in Prescott, Ariz., losing 8-4 and 11-3.

Jayleen Espinoza went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, and Krisilyn Corral collected a pair of hits in three at-bats in the loss.

The Matadors scored the first three runs of the game as Arizona Western opened the scoring with a run in the second inning and upped the lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the third.

Yavapai put up a crooked number in the third inning, scoring four runs and doing so again in the fifth inning to pull away, scoring eight of the final nine runs of the game.

Hannah Love finished the opener 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Analy Trejo threw a scoreless inning of relief.

Trejo and Larissa Rueda each homered in game two as the Matadors fell 11-3 in the final game of the doubleheader.

Yavapai scored two runs in the first inning and the Matadors were able to respond in the third inning with a run to cut the deficit to 2-1.

After the Roughriders scored two in the bottom of the third inning, the Matadors answered with two of their own in the fourth. The Roughriders scored nine unanswered runs, with six of them coming in the fifth inning to end the game.

The Matadors and Roughriders will finish the series with a Doubleheader on Saturday, March 29, with the first pitch scheduled for 11:00 am at Bill Vallely Field.
