Rueda powers Matadors Softball to doubleheader sweep over Yavapai

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (22-13, 8-8) scored 19 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Yavapai (15-11, 8-8) on Saturday afternoon in Prescott, Ariz., winning 9-2 and 10-2.

Larissa Rueda slugged two home runs and went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in as the Matadors used a three-run first inning to take control of the opener early.

The Matadors scored runs in all but two innings in the 9-2 win, adding to their 3-0 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a Hannah Love single and a Rauni Gallegos sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-0.

After Yavapai scored their two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning before Arizona Western tallied a run in the fifth inning, two more in the sixth, and capped off the scoring in the seventh on an Alissa Pinon RBI ground out.

Daisy Juarez earned the win in the circle for the Matadors, throwing four innings and allowing two runs.

Analy Trejo went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in, while Nadya Moreno went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs batted in, in the Matadors' 10-2 win in game two.

The Matadors scored the first three runs of the game, scoring a run in the first, second, and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead.

After the Roughriders cut the lead to 3-2, Arizona Western scored seven runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by Rueda's third home run of the doubleheader and a Trejo home run.

Krisilyn Corral threw 5.2 inning,s allowing two runs on five hits while recording a strikeout in the win.

The Matadors are back on the road on Friday, April 4, taking on Eastern Arizona in Thatcher, Ariz., in a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
