
Softball splits doubleheader with Gila Monsters to open series at Eastern Arizona
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Softball team (23-14, 9-9) split a doubleheader in Thatcher, Ariz., on Friday afternoon against Eastern Arizona (20-9, 11-3) coming from behind to win 10-5 in game one before falling 10-1 in game two.
Larissa Rueda smacked a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning as the Matadors scored six runs to come from behind and win game one.
Rueda went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in while Hannah Love went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in the win.
The Matadors trailed 3-0, entering the fourth inning, before plating four runs to grab a 4-3 lead. The lead only lasted a half inning as the Gila Monsters took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth with three runs.
Rueda smashed a two-run homer in the seventh inning to put the Matadors in front 7-5, and the Matadors added three more insurance runs to win game one.
Eastern Arizona used a six-run second inning to pull away early in game two as Love went 1-for-2 with the lone RBI for the Matadors.
Love drove in the only Matadors' run in the fourth inning to cut the Eastern Arizona lead to 10-1 before the Gila Monsters closed the game out in five innings.
The Matadors and Gila Monsters wrap up the series on Saturday, April ,5 with a doubleheader beginning at Noon at Eastern Arizona College Softball Field.
