Women's Basketball shakes off slow start to beat Roughriders 69-56

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Women's Basketball team (17-5, 13-2) pushed their home winning streak to nine games with a 37-32 win over Yavapai (5-16, 5-9) on Friday evening at the House Gymnasium.

Three Lady Matadors finished in doubl-figures with Alliance Ndiba leading the way with 19 points and 14 rebounds, recording her fourth consecutive double-double.

The Lady Matadors jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first quarter before Yavapai went on a run and outscored Arizona Western 12-2 over the final 6 minutes of the first quarter to take a 14-9 lead after the first. The Lady Matadors grabbed the lead back in the second quarter on a Dyvine Harris three to go up 27-25 before the Roughriders scored just before the break to tie the game at 27-27 the half.

Davielis Berroa drained her second three-pointer of the game early in the third quarter to put the Lady Matadors up 33-29, helping the Lady Matadors build a 39-31 lead. Arizona Western scored 21 points in each of the third and the fourth quarters to pull away, outscoring the Roughriders 21-12 in the third.

Rita Gomes scored 13 points off the bench and Harris added 11 and had seven assists in the win.

The Lady Matadors are back home on Saturday afternoon, hosting Yavapai at 2:00 pm at the House Gymnasium.  Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
