Third quarter run helps Women's Basketball pull away from Utah State Eastern for 68-50 win

THATCHER, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Women's Basketball team (1-0) opened the 2024-25 season with a 68-50 win over Utah State Eastern (2-1) on Thursday afternoon in Thatcher thanks to a 23-point third quarter.

Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe scored all 21 of her points in the second half to help the Matadors pull away from the Golden Eagles.

The Matadors led by a point at the half and scored the first ten points of the second half to take the lead for good after a back-and-forth first two quarters.

Arizona Western outscored the Golden Eagles 23-8 in the third quarter, highlighted by 12 third-quarter points from Zonzon-Huyghe.

Rita Gomes finished the game as the Matadors' second-leading scorer, scoring 13 points, and hitting three three-pointers. Freshman forward Mable Doumbia ended the game with 12 points and led the team in rebounds with seven in the win. Dyvine Harris led the Matadors in assists with eight.

Defensively, the Matadors forced 23 Utah State Eastern turnovers to help the Matadors pull away from the Golden Eagles.

The Matadors are back in action on Friday, November 8, when they take on Colorado Northwestern at 11:30 a.m. in Thatcher, Ariz., at Guitteau Gym.
