
Women's Basketball suffers first loss of the season, falling 80-79 to Casper
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Women's Basketball team (3-1) dropped its first game of the season on Friday evening, letting a late lead slip away in an 80-79 loss to Casper (3-2) in Casper, Wyo., at Swede Erickson Thunderbird Gymnasium.
Freshman forward Mable Doumbia led the Matadors in scoring, pouring 22 points while Dyvine Harris finished the game as the Matadors' second-leading scorer with 14 points.
The Matadors led for 39 of the 40 minutes on Friday, before Casper took its first lead at 77-76 with 49 seconds remaining. With the Matadors trailing 78-76, Rita Gomes put the Matadors back in front with a three from the wing, giving her 12 points for the game, putting the Matadors up 79-78. Casper retook the lead for good with 7.4 seconds remaining,
As a team, the Matadors hit 13 three-pointers, seven of which came in the first quarter as the Matadors scored 25 points in the first 10 minutes of the game.
The Matadors are back in action in Casper, Wyo., Saturday, November 16, taking on Northwest at Noon at Swede Erickson Thunderbird Gymnasium.
