Gomes shoots way to ACCAC DI Women's Basketball Player of the Week honor

YUMA, Ariz. – Arizona Western Matadors Women's Basketball sophomore Rita Gomes was named the ACCAC DI Women's Basketball Player of the Week after helping the Matadors to a pair of wins at the Chapman Automotive Thanksgiving Classic.

Gomes averaged 17 points per game in the Matador's wins over the weekend, shooting 63.2 percent from the field while hitting nine three-pointers and averaging 2.5 steals per contest to earn her second ACCAC DI Women's Basketball Player of the Week award of her career.

The guard started the weekend by scoring 19 points in the Matadors' 84-60 win over the then No. 12 ranked Odessa, playing 37 minutes. Gomes went 4-for-8 from the three-point line and recorded a season-high five steals to help the Matadors win their third consecutive game.

Gomes finished the weekend with a 15-point performance in just 13 minutes in the Matadors' 89-14 win over Jessup University JV on Saturday afternoon, connecting on five three-pointers in eight attempts.

Through eight games this season, Gomes is averaging 11.9 points per game and is shooting 38.8 percent from three while averaging 4.4 rebounds per game.
