
Women's Basketball pulls away in fourth quarter to beat No. 25 Cochise 70-55
YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 17 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Women's Basketball team (9-1, 3-0) outscored the No. 25 ranked Cochise (5-4, 1-2) 21-7 in the fourth quarter to win its sixth consecutive game, beating the Apaches 70-55 on Wednesday night at the House Gymnasium.
The Matadors were led by Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe who scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win.
Arizona Western took the lead early, going up four points at 15-11 on Rita Gomes' second made three-pointer of the first quarter, and took a 15-13 lead into the second quarter. The Matadors used a run to take a 24-18 lead on a Mable Doumbia jumper before Cochise went on an 8-2 run to tie the game up at 26-26. Doumbia gave the Matadors a 33-31 lead at halftime.
The Matadors opened the second half on a 6-2 run and grabbed a 40-33 lead before the Apaches stormed back to take their only lead of the second half at 46-43 with two minutes left in the third quarter. Arizona Western closed the game on a 24-12 run, outscoring the Apaches 21-7 in the third quarter to earn the win.
Gomes and Doumbia each finished the game with 12 points while Nyah Hardy provided nine off the bench and Dyvine Harris chipped in with eight points and eight assists.
The Matadors return to the court on Sunday, December 15, hosting No. 4 ranked Southern Idaho at 6:00 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
