
Zozon-Huyghe's big fourth quarter propels Women's Basketball to 67-58 win over No. 4 Southern Idaho
YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 17 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Women's Basketball team (10-1) used a big fourth quarter to come from behind and beat No. 4 ranked Southern Idaho (10-2) 67-58 on Sunday evening at the House Gymnasium.
Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe scored a game-high 24 points and went 5-for-9 from the three-point line in the Matadors' seventh consecutive win.
After scoring the first three points of the game, the Golden Eagles scored seven consecutive to open a 7-3 lead before the Matadors used a run of their own, scoring eight straight points to open an 11-7 lead. Southern Idaho outscored the Matadors 12-2 over the final few minutes of the first quarter.
The Matadors pulled to within a point at 23-22 two minutes into the second half and battled back to tie the game at 29-29 on a jumper from Zonzon-Huyghe with 1:37 remaining. Southern Idaho jumped back to take a 34-31 lead into the locker room.
After Rita Gomes hit a three to open the third quarter, Southern Idaho took the lead back with a layup before the Matadors went on an 8-0 run, pushing their lead to 44-38 on a Mable Doumbia basket. The Golden Eagles took the lead back at the end of the quarter as the Matadors went into the fourth quarter trailing 48-46.
Both teams traded the lead in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter before the Matadors raced out to a 62-55 lead as Zonzon-Huyghe scored 14 of her 24 points in the final quarter to help the Matadors outscore the Golden Eagles 21-10 in the fourth quarter to win the opener of the Chapman Automotive Christmas Classic.
The Matadors return to the court on day two of the Chapman Automotive Christmas Classic, hosting Midland on Monday, December 16, at 5:00 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
