
Zonzon Huyghe scored 29 in Matadors' 54-40 win over No. 14 Eastern Arizona
YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 16 ranked Arizona Western College Matadors Women's Basketball team (14-2, 5-1) returned to the win column on Wednesday night, beating No. 14 ranked Eastern Arizona (14-4, 5-2) 54-40 at the House Gymnasium.
Naomy Zonzon-Hughye led all scorers with a season-high 29 points while grabbing eight rebounds in the Matadors' second win over the Gila Monsters this season.
Both teams started slow offensively, combining for just 18 points in the first 10 minutes with the Matadors leading 10-8 entering the second quarter. Arizona Western scored six of the first eight points, building a 16-10 lead and eventually pushing the advantage to 23-16 on a Nyah Hardy three-pointer and after Eastern scored a basket late in the first half before Dyvine Harris beat the buzzer to give the Matadors a 25-20 lead at the break.
Harris opened the third quarter with a three-pointer to push the lead to 28-22. Zonzon-Huyghe scored five straight points and the Matadors opened up a 35-24 lead. Arizona Western opened its largest lead of the game at 42-28 late in the third. Eastern put together a 7-0 run to open the fourth quarter to trim the Matadors' lead to 42-35 before Zonzon-Huyghe halted the run with a layup. The Matadors pulled away for the 54-40 win.
Harris finished the game with 15 points while Nyah Hardy scored 10 off the bench in the win.
The Matadors are back on action in the road on Saturday, January 18, heading to San Bernardino, Calif., to take on Community Christian in an ACCAC matchup at 3:00 pm Arizona time.
