Women's Basketball shakes off slow start to take down Roughriders 73-35
YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 14 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Women's Basketball team (15-2, 7-1) used a big second quarter to earn its second consecutive win, beating Yavapai 4-12, 2-8) 73-35 on Saturday afternoon in Prescott, Ariz., at Walraven Gymnasium.
Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe led the Matadors with 14 points while Nyah Hardy added 12 points in the Matadors' win over the Roughriders.
After Yavapai grabbed an early 2-1 lead, the Matadors went on a 6-0 run to open up a 6-2 advantage in the first five minutes of the first quarter, capped off by a Jordon Labrador-Hallet, layup in transition. The Roughriders came storming back to tie the game at 8-8 on a made three-pointer late in the first quarter before Isabella Molina beat the buzzer with a layup to put the Matadors up 10-8 entering the second quarter.
The Matadors opened the second quarter on a 15-2 run, opening a 25-10 lead on a Nyah Hardy three-pointer to force a Yavapai timeout midway through the second quarter. The Matadors' run continued after the timeout, eventually opening up a 33-10 lead and eventually outscoring the Roughriders 29-4 in the second quarter to take a 39-12 lead at the halftime break.
Arizona Western pulled away in the second half, scoring 34 points in the second half to earn its second consecutive win and remain in first place in the ACCAC.
The Matadors head to Douglas, Ariz., on Wednesday, January 29, taking on Cochise at 5:30 pm from Apache Stronghold Gymnasium.
