
Women's Basketball uses balanced attack to beat Yavapai 78-28
YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 12 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Women's Basketball team (22-3, 13-2) led wire-to-wire on Wednesday night, earning a season-series sweep over Yavapai (5-18, 2-13) with a 78-28 win at the House Gymnasium.
Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe led four Matadors in double-figures, scoring a game-high 19 points to help lead the Matadors past the Roughriders.
The Matadors scored the first 14 points of the game, opening up a 14-0 lead before Yavapai scored its first points of the game with just three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Arizona Western took a 21-4 lead into the second quarter. The Roughriders were able to trim the Matadors' lead to 27-10, forcing an Arizona Western timeout. The Matadors went on a 7-0 run out of the timeout and pushed the lead up to 44-14 at the halftime break.
Arizona Western scored the first ix points of the third quarter and outscored the Roughriders 16-8 in the third quarter to take a 60-22 lead to the final period. The Matadors held the Roughriders to single digits in three of the four quarters, allowing just six points in the fourth to finish the game off.
Mable Doumbia scored 18 points to finish the game as the Matadors' second-leading scorer while Nyah Hardy added 11 points off the bench and Jordan Labrador-Hallett scored 10 in the win.
The Matadors hold a two-game lead over Cochise in the ACCAC DI standings with three games remaining in the regular season.
The Matadors are back home on Saturday, February 22, hosting Cochise in the final regular season home game at 2:00 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
