Women's Basketball fends off Vaqueras, beating Central Arizona 67-65

COOLIDGE, Ariz. – The No. 12 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Women's Basketball team (24-3, 15-2) extended its winning streak to eight games with a 67-65 win over Central Arizona (13-15, 7-10) on Wednesday night.

Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe led the Matadors with 22 points and Dyvine Harris added 18 in the win over the Vaqueras.

Central Arizona got off to a hot start shooting the basketball as the Matadors fell behind 12-4 before the Matadors cut the deficit to 12-10. Central Arizona outscored the Matadors 14-9 over the final five minutes of the quarter to take a 26-19 lead into the second quarter. The Matadors took their first lead at 31-30 on a pair of Zonzon-Huyghe free throws.

After being tied at 36-36 at the halftime break, the Matadors opened a 40-36 lead before Central roared back with a 6-0 run. Harris gave the Matadors a 54-52 lead at the end of the third quarter with a buzzer-beating layup. The Matadors took the lead late in the fourth quarter with under a minute to play when Nyah Hardy scored on a scoop layup to put the Matadors up 66-65. After a Dyvine Harris made free throw, Central Arizona missed a three at the buzzer.

The Matadors wrap up the regular season on the road, heading to Henderson, Nev., on Saturday, March 1, taking on College of Southern Nevada at 3:00 pm.
