
Women's Basketball falls 76-75 in Region I Semifinal despite Gomes' 32-point night
YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 11 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Women's Basketball team (25-4) suffered a 76-75 loss to College of Southern Nevada (22-9) in the Region I Semifinals on Saturday night at the House Gymnasium despite a 32-point effort from Rita Gomes.
Gomes led all scorers with 32 points, hitting 10 three-pointers on 16 attempts, and was one of three Matadors in double figures in the loss.
The Matadors had a 10-0 in the first quarter to jump out to a 17-7 lead before the Coyotes finished the first quarter with a 6-0 run, with all the points coming from the free-throw line. The Matadors pushed the lead back to 10 points after a Nyah Hardy fastbreak bucket to put the Matadors up 28-18. Arizona Western took a 33-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
After the Coyotes cut the Matadors' lead to one point early in the third quarter, the Matadors hit a few three-pointers, including one from Gomes, to increase the lead back to 43-36. The Coyotes took their first lead in the fourth quarter since they led 2-0 at the beginning of the game, going up 61-60 midway through the fourth. The Matadors led 74-71 after a Gomes three but were unable to hang onto the lead.
Southern Nevada shot 35 free throws in the win, while the Matadors shot seven, going 4-for-7 in the loss.
Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe scored 17 points to finish as the Matadors' second-leading score,r and Dyvine Harris added 12.
The Matadors will now have to wait for their national tournament fate, hoping to gain an at-large bid into the NJCAA DI Women's Basketball Championship.
