YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 4 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Women's Soccer team continued its undefeated season, winning the Region I championship with a 2-0 victory over Eastern Arizona on Saturday evening at Matador Soccer Field.
The Matadors scored the game-winning goal late in the first half, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute when Maria Lopez sent a low shot past the Gila Monster's keeper off an assist from Loegan Alia to give the Matadors the advantage.
Arizona Western added its second goal early in the second half, once again off an assist from Alia who crossed a ball into the 18-yard box where Jezmin Castellanos was waiting, beating the keeper at the back post to push the lead to 2-0.
Iyan Hernandez made a big save late in the game, leaping to push a ball off the bar, keeping the Gila Monsters off the board.
The Matadors will be back home on Saturday, November 9, hosting the West District Championship Game against the winner of Region 18, Salt Lake, at 7:00 pm at Matador Soccer Field.
