Women's Soccer heads back to Wichita with 2-1 win over Salt Lake in West District final

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 4 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Women's Soccer team (17-0) held off No. 6 ranked Salt Lake (16-3) 2-1 to claim its second straight West District title and qualify for the program's third NJCAA DI Women's Soccer Championship appearance.

The Matadors almost took the lead in the 16th minute when Dianna Taddei chipped a ball past the keeper, hitting the post before it was cleared off the line to keep the game scoreless.

Yui Suetsugu put the Matadors up 1-0 in the 20th minute, beating the keeper to the back post to give the Matadors the lead. Arizona Western added to its lead eight minutes later when Mariany de Souza sent a cross in the 18-yard box where Leigha Dobbins smashed into the net, pushing the lead to 2-0.

Salt Lake held most of the possession in the final 10 minutes of the first half and was able to break through two minutes into the second half on a header off a free kick, cutting the Matadors' lead to one at 2-1.

Arizona Western regained control of the game and despite hitting the post late in the second half, were able to fend off the Bruins for the 2-1 win.

Arizona Western will now wait to see where it will seeded in the 2024 NJCAA DI Women's Soccer Championship, taking place at the Stryker Complex in Wichita, Kan., November 17-23. The selection show will take place, on Tuesday, November 12.
