Lady Matadors with sixth straight with straight sets win over Cougars

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 18 ranked Arizona Western College Lady Matadors Volleyball team (12-2, 4-0) extended its match-winning streak to six with a 3-0 win over South Mountain (4-8, 0-3) on Friday night in Phoenix.

The reigning ACCAC DI Offensive Player of the Week Evelyn Trivino led the Lady Matadors with 20 assists as Arizona Western won in straight sets for the fifth consecutive match.

The Lady Matadors fell behind early in the first set, trailing 4-1 before grabbing an 8-7 lead. With the Lady Matadors trailing 20-18, Arizona Western went on a 7-2 run to close out the first set with a 25-22 win. The second set was back and forth before the Lady Matadors used a 6-0 run to take control of the set with a 10-4 lead, eventually winning the second set 25-21. For the fifth straight match, the Lady Matadors were able to win in straight sets, outlasting South Mountain 27-25 in the third set.

Amanda Juliao led the Lady Matadors in kills with nine while Gabriela Martensson finished with seven. Ma'o Lauhingoa ended the night as the team leader in digs with 10 and Jazmin Cuellar recorded the lone Lady Matadors' block in the win.

The Lady Matadors head to North Las Vegas, Nev., on Thursday, September 14 for the Lady Coyote Volleyball Classic, opening play against Southern Idaho at 5:00 pm.
