Juliao, Trivino guide Lady Matadors to sweep of Eastern Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 16 ranked Arizona Western Lady Matadors Volleyball team (16-4, 6-0) swept Eastern Arizona (15-10, 4-3) 3-0 behind double-doubles from Amanda Juliao and Evelyn Trevino on Friday night in Thatcher.

Julia led the Lady Matadors with 21 kills and 14 digs while Evelyn Trivino tallied 38 assists while picking up 12 digs. Aly Reeser had 12 digs and Ma'o Lauhingoa added 10.  

Eastern Arizona took an early lead in the first set, going on a 4-0 scoring run to open a 4-2 lead. Juliao picked up two early kills to put the Lady Matadors up 7-6. Jazmin Cuellar kept the Lady Matadors in the lead with an ace before blocking an Eastern Arizona attack to extend the lead to 16-13. The Lady Matadors took the opening set 25-21.

Just like in the first set, Eastern jumped out to an early lead, scoring four of the first five points. Josi Capellan tied the set at 9-9 with a kill and the Lady Matadors scored 6 of the next eight points to take a 15-11 lead and going on to win the set 25-22.

Juliao helped the Lady Matadors build a lead in the third set after tying the set at 5-5, Juliao would record the kill that put the Lady Matadors in front 20-18. Lauhingoa gave the Lady Matadors a 23-22 lead to break the late tie. Gabriela Martensson finished the match off with a kill to give the Lady Matadors a 25-23 win in the third set.

Arizona Western returns home on Tuesday, October 3, hosting Pima at 7:00 p.m. at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
