Volleyball sweeps Pima for third straight win

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 16 ranked Arizona Western Lady Matador Volleyball team (17-4, 7-0) won its third consecutive match and pushed its set winning streak to nine with a 3-0 win over Pima (8-13, 4-5) on Tuesday night at the House Gymnasium.

Amanda Juliao led the Lady Matadors with 10 kills while Aly Reeser provided the defense with 10 digs in the win over the Aztecs.

Arizona Western opened the match on a 6-0 scoring run in the first set and eventually opened up a 15-5 lead after a Pima error. Josi Capellan recorded a kill to push the lead to 19-8 before the Lady Matadors closed out the set 25-12.

The Lady Matadors had to come from behind in the second set after trailing 12-8, Arizona Western used a run to even the set at 12-12 and later took a 15-14 lead before winning the second set 25-21. The Lady Matadors led from the start in the third set, scoring seven of the first 10 points and going on to finish the sweep with a 25-21 win.

Ma'o Lauhingoa along with Evelyn Trivino each finished the match with eight digs while Trivino led the Lady Matadors in assists with 20.

The Lady Matadors are back in action at home tomorrow, Tuesday, October 7, hosting Glendale at 7:00 p.m., at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
